The Ammermann Family History
With his brother and other family members, W. D. started "der Ware Hollandische Gereformeerde Kerk in Amerika," one of the first Christian Reformed churches in the US. Sixty-five families joined this newly formed church. They had attended the Silver Creek Reformed Church in German Valley until 22 Aug 1866. W.D. was the scribe for the church. In Apr 1882 the name was changed to Hollandische Christelyke Gereformeerde Keerke (Holland Christian Reformed Church). It is still located in Ridott Township, Stephenson county, IL.
The Dutch language was used when the church was started, but there was pressure to change to the German tongue. Wubbe "was vehemently against that change." In 1887 the W. D. AMMERMANN family moved to MN, having bought land there in 1886. In 1889 Rev. POTGETER came to the Ridott church; in 1893 the church went to German sermons.
W. D. named the Church in Rheiderland Township, Chippewa county, MN after Bunde, the town where he attended church in Germany. He was an elder in the Bunde Christian Reformed Church until his death.

Bunde Christian Reformed Church; Semi-Centennial Celebration
"As leader and promoter of this new colony [in Chippewa county, MN], Mr. W. D. Ammermann of seceder stock, and former elder of our Ridott Church [in IL], was determined that the religious life should not be neglected, and he and his wife and children gladly opened their home to welcome religious services, he himself taking the lead and on the Lord's Day gathered around him his family and the neighbors to worship the Lord. This formed the nucleus of our church."
"This committee met with the people of this community at the home of the Ammermanns on Friday, December 9, 1887... the congregation was duly organized, with Mr. W. D. Ammermann as secretary which office he held until his death in 1894. ......charter members...a total of ten families, twenty three members, with sixty six souls."
"For some time the services were held at the Ammermann home... Later a school house was built near where our present church property is located, and for a while, since Nov. 16, 1886, was kindly set aside also for the use of the congregation."
"November 29, 1888 the following committee was appointed to look up a suitable location large enough for a church, parsonage and cemetery: W. D. Ammermann, Nan Fokken... The result of their findins led to the purchase of four acres at $25.00 an acre of Mr. J. J. Ahlfs and is unto this day the home of our church. When later the school-house was moved, that acre was purchased for $30.00. Meanwhile through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Theo: F. Koch an additional forty acres half mile east of the church was added to our possessions."
"The language question has also been a matter of concern at different times. At the beginning the German and Dutch were used but in 1914 the Dutch was dropped. Since then the congregation has in recent years been headed for an English speaking church, only two services a month are now held in the German language. ...These transition periods are not always the most pleasant, and it requires some grace at times to adjust one's self to the new situation, which hitherto has been done more or less in an amiable way."

W. D. AMMERMANN was born on 25 Nov 1827 in Bunde, Ostfriesland. He was christened on 10 [sic] Nov 1827 by the brother of his mother, Pastor Martin Geerds POLMANN. Bunde is located in the Rheiderland District, once mile from where the Holland/German border is situated today.

[W]. D. AMMERMANN, his wife Trientje, and their son Dirk, left from the Port of Bremen in Ostfriesland with a cargo and crew of more than 550 people. They were passengers #350, 351 & 352: W. D. AMMERMANN, age 36, male from Bunde, Germany, with Trientje AMMERMANN, age 24, female & Dirk AMMERMANN, male age 1/4 [one year, 4 months?], both also from Bunde, Germany. They arrived in New York City aboard the 2375-ton Russian steamship "Bremen" on 28 Apr 1864, from Bremen, Germany. Traveled to German Valley, IL, where Wubbe's sister Antje and her husband Geerd Freerks PETERSEN (Trientje's brother) had gone ten months earlier. The rest of the family, including his parents and sisters, followed two years later.

No. 1254: Wubbe Dirks AMMERMAN applied for naturalization in Stephenson County, IL on 5 Apr 1867, renouncing allegiance to the King of Hannover; he signed the paper of intent to naturalize. He was granted citizenship 17 Dec 1872. Testimony given by B. ROESING & Engelke AMMERMANN, citizens, was that he had resided in the U.S. for 5 years, one year in the state of IL, 2 years since application, and that Wubbe Dirks AMMERMANN "has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles contained in the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order, well being and happiness of the same."

Ammermann Family History, The
All of the land in what later became Rheiderland Township was purchased from the Saint Paul, Duluth Railroad Company by FREDERICKSEN & PRINS on 22 Mar 1886. W. D. and Trientje AMMERMANN were the first settlers,
purchasing 160 acres on 7 May 1886 from N. C. FREDERICKSEN & M. W. PRINS, Jr., filing a mortgage for $960. Less than 9 months later, they purchased another 160 acres from Marten W. PRINS, Jr. & Theodore F. KOCH, filing another mortgage for $960. Over the next 8 years they bought more land.
"Wubbe supposedly traveled to Chicago to meet with members of this land company and came to an agreement to serve as their agent in this new frontier."
The Warranty Deed on file in Chippewa county, MN; BOOK L, p. 180, No. 423: dated 7 May 1886, between N. C. FREDERIKSEN & Ada M. FREDERIKSEN his wife, & M. W. PRINS, Jr. & Johanna M. PRINS, his wife, all of Chicago, Cook county, IL (sellers) and W. D. AMMERMANN of Pecatonica, Winnebago county, IL. He bought 160 acres in Chippewa county, MN for $1280. Description: the SW quarter of Section No. 9 in Township No. 117 North of Range No. 37 W of the 5th principal meridian.
A Land Contract No. 424 [No. 1631 in margin], recorded on p. 280B, was dated 19 Apr 1886 [just before the one above], another 160 acres, for $1520.

Bunde Christian Reformed Church; Semi-Centennial Celebration
"The well-known firm of Prins and Koch purchased huge tracts of this prairie land and induced the thrifty Ostfriesian and Holland people to settle here... The first one to purchase a tract of land, so Mr. Theo. F. Koch who is still living, informs us, was Mr. W. D. Ammermann, an uncle of our present pastor, and it was he who named the Township after his homeland across the Ocean, Rheiderland, and gave to the church the name of his native place, Bunde."

W. D.'s sons Dirk and Geerd, and daughter Meemke, along with a carpenter, went in the spring of 1886 to break the land on the new prairie acreage, where land was cheaper than in IL. They traveled to Renville by train, about 18 miles away. There were few trees in the area (Lone Tree Township was well named), and they moved a small cattle herder's shelter to the property. The rest of the family moved to MN in the spring of 1887.

On petition of D. W. AMMERMANN, dated 16 Jan 1899, he was named administrator of [his father's] estate, who died intestate on 14 [sic] Sep 1894, and gave bond of $4000.
An Inventory dated 21 Feb 1899 listed personal property, now allowed to the widow, included $40 of "Furniture and Household Goods," including an Organ ($7) and 2 stoves ($10). There was "Stock in Banks and other Corporations" ($20), livestock ($269), and farm implements ($160).
Probate No. 390, filed 6 Nov 1899, recorded in BOOK E OF ORDERS, p. 260. Trintje AMMERMANN, surviving wife, was given a life estate to the property during her life, also one third of the other real estate. The homestead was described as:
the East Half of the SE quarter of Section 9 in Township 117 of Range 37.
